La Maddalena boat tour operators: who they are and how to choose

The La Maddalena boat tour operators are a few dozen companies, most of them family-run, based in Palau, on La Maddalena itself, in Santa Teresa Gallura and around the Gulf of Arzachena. We publish an independent profile of each one, and group them here by departure port and by the kind of boat they run.

Two things are worth reading before the list itself: the criteria we use to judge an operator, and the difference between buying at the kiosks on the Palau waterfront and booking online.

What these profiles are

How to judge a boat tour operator

Six criteria, in order of importance:

1. The boat. A big motor ship, a vintage wooden boat, a catamaran, a RIB, a sailing yacht: everything follows from this, from how the boat behaves in a swell to whether there is anywhere to lie down. The guide to catamaran and sailing tours sets out the differences.
2. Group size. The catamarans listed on GetYourGuide take a maximum of 12 people; the motor ships carry far more. In August you feel that difference at every swim stop.
3. Lunch. Pasta with water and wine, an aperitivo (drinks with snacks), a full sit-down meal, or nothing at all. The listing says so under “What’s included”.
4. The park contribution. Some listings ask for a small per-person contribution in cash at check-in; one Santa Teresa listing quotes €5. Look for it under “Not included”.
5. Cancellation policy. The GetYourGuide listings we cite offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, plus a refund or a new date when the operator cancels because of the mistral.
6. Reviews. Read the count, not just the average: 4.4 from two thousand reviews tells you more than 5.0 from three. Read the August ones to see how an operator copes with a full boat.

Palau kiosks or booking online

The kiosk suits last-minute decisions outside the busy months. In high season, or when the forecast is uncertain, free online cancellation is worth more than a few euros off.
