After checking, we have to be plain: the only business we found under this name is a vehicle rental, not a boat rental. This page explains what we verified, why the confusion happens, and where to go if you want a boat day in the La Maddalena Archipelago or along the Costa Smeralda.

What we found

In September 2026 a web search for the exact name returned one website, smeraldanoleggio.it, whose search listing describes car rental, scooter rental and nine-seat minivan rental with fast delivery and a €500 deposit. That description is the sum of what we can attribute to the company. The website itself returned a redirect error every time we tried to load it, so we could not check an address, opening hours, rates or a fleet list, and we found no Google Maps, Tripadvisor or Facebook page with reviews we could tie to it with certainty.

We found no boat, RIB or “gommone” offer associated with the name, and no departure port. If the company adds boats, or if you know otherwise, write to us and we will re-check.

Why the name causes confusion

“Noleggio” simply means rental in Italian, and “Smeralda” is borrowed by dozens of businesses around the Costa Smeralda. Searches for Smeralda Noleggio escursioni or Smeralda Noleggio La Maddalena mix this vehicle company with boat operators whose names contain the same words: Smeralda Boats in Cannigione, for instance, which we review separately, and a string of “noleggio gommoni Costa Smeralda” companies in Porto Cervo, Cannigione, Porto Rotondo and Golfo Aranci.

A quick check before you hand a deposit to anyone: the company should name its departure marina, show the boats with lengths and engine sizes, state whether a licence is needed, and say whether fuel and the park permit are included. If a site cannot answer those four points, keep looking.

Where the vehicle rental could still help

If you are staying inland or on the coast south of Olbia, a rented car or scooter is the practical way to reach a boat departure. The distances:

• Olbia airport to Palau: about 40 km, roughly 45 minutes.
• Palau to Cannigione: about 15 km.
• Palau to Porto Cervo: about 30 km.

ARST buses link Olbia with Palau in about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half, but departures thin out early and late, so a vehicle delivered to your accommodation is worth pricing if you plan more than one boat day. Free parking near Palau’s port fills by 9:30 in August; budget for the paid multi-storey car park.

How boat rental actually works on the Costa Smeralda

Since most people who land on this page want a boat, here are the rules that apply to every rental company in the area:

• Licence. In Italy no boating licence is needed for engines up to 40 hp (30 kW). Rental companies in Palau, Cannigione and Porto Cervo offer 5–6 m RIBs in this class from roughly spring to October. Bigger engines need a licence, or a skipper.
• Park permit. Any private boat entering the Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago di La Maddalena needs a navigation permit, priced by boat length and bought online from the park authority. Rental companies usually leave it out of the day rate; ask who buys it.
• Fuel. Almost always extra, paid at the end according to what you burned.
• Anchoring. According to the park authority, anchoring on Posidonia seagrass is forbidden; use the mooring buoys in the main coves. Landing on the Spiaggia Rosa of Budelli is forbidden.
• Weather. A rental company will not let a licence-free RIB out in a strong mistral. Keep a flexible day.

Prices vary by boat and month, and we do not quote rental rates here; check the operator’s site or the platform listing for the date you want.

Insider tip: From Porto Cervo, the archipelago is a longer run than from Palau. If your goal is Spargi and the Budelli pools, rent in Palau or La Maddalena, and use Porto Cervo only if you want the Costa Smeralda coves and Mortorio, which also belongs to the park.
