Maddalena Experience review: the Orient Express day around the archipelago, stops, prices and who it suits

Maddalena Experience is a La Maddalena-based company whose whole business is one boat and one day: the Orient Express, a 20-metre motor boat that leaves Palau at 10:00 and La Maddalena at 11:15 and strings together six stops before returning. Maddalena Experience reviews are fewer than for the big Palau ships, so we lean on what the company publishes and on the Viator and Tripadvisor product pages that carry the same tour.

The legal entity is Maddalena Experience sas, registered at Via Santa Teresa di Gallura 15 in La Maddalena. That island base is the first thing that sets it apart from the Palau fleet we list on the operators hub; the second is an itinerary that reads more like a guided day than a beach shuttle.

What they offer

The itinerary page for its escursioni describes six elements rather than the usual four stops. A walk through the historic centre of La Maddalena, past the old buildings and craft shops around Piazza Garibaldi and Via Garibaldi. A swim stop at Cala Granara on Spargi, a smaller cove than the usual Cala Corsara. A photo stop at Spiaggia Rosa on Budelli, from the water, since landing there has been forbidden by the park since 1994. A swim and snorkel at the Piscine Naturali of Porto della Madonna between Budelli, Razzoli and Santa Maria. A photo stop at Santa Maria. Then a long stop, listed at 75 minutes, at Cala Corsara on Spargi, with Cala Garibaldi on Caprera as the fall-back when the wind makes Corsara untenable.

The day lasts about seven hours. The company says departures are daily from roughly 25 April to 15 October; a reseller listing gives 1 May to 15 October for 2026, so check the first and last weeks. The route is described as chosen each day for the weather, which is standard in the archipelago and a good thing.

Insider tip: Boarding at La Maddalena at 11:15 means the Palau passengers have already claimed the upper-deck loungers. If you care about sun-deck seats, board at Palau; if you care about a slow breakfast, board at La Maddalena and settle for the covered deck.

Boats and comfort

The Orient Express is described on the company’s site as 20 metres long with two decks: a covered lower deck and an open upper deck with sun loungers and shaded areas. On board are toilets, Wi-Fi and a bar selling a selection of pre-packed light lunches, cocktails and other drinks. Passenger capacity is not published anywhere we could find, which is the single most useful number for judging crowding, so ask when you book.

A few reviews mention an older boat and dirty windows on the covered deck; others describe it as comfortable and clean. We did not verify snorkel gear; bring your own mask for the natural pools. There is no mention of a swim platform or ladder design, so ask if anyone in your group has trouble climbing.

Prices and what’s included

Maddalena Experience prices are not published as a list on its website at the time of writing (September 2026). The fare appears only inside the FareHarbor booking widget once you pick a date, and on reseller pages. We do not repeat reseller prices here because they change and because they are not the operator’s own published figures.

What we can say about inclusions: the site presents the light lunches and drinks as available on board, not as part of the ticket. The national park landing contribution is not mentioned on the pages we read; on most shared tours it is either inside the fare or collected in cash at check-in, so ask which applies and carry a few euros per person in case. Cancellation terms are set in the booking widget; read them before paying.

What customers say

Public reviews are spread across the Viator listing “Boat tour of the La Maddalena Archipelago” and the matching Tripadvisor product page in Palau, plus the operator’s own site. We did not see a review count large enough to quote a rating with confidence, so we do not.

What the reviews we read repeat: praise for the variety of stops, for the food served on board (charcuterie boards with Sardinian products come up), for staff described as kind and efficient, and for the route. Returning customers mention coming back a second year. The negatives we found: an older boat, dirty windows on the covered deck, and the usual archipelago disappointment that the Pink Beach is seen from a distance. We found no reports of safety issues or missed departures.

Departure logistics

Palau departure at 10:00 means being at the port by about 09:30; the tourist port piers are numbered and the exact pier is given when you book. Paid parking is next to the port and in the multi-storey car park; free spaces fill by 09:30 in August. From La Maddalena the boat leaves at 11:15 from the town port, where the Delcomar and Maddalena Lines ferries from Palau also arrive, so a morning crossing from Palau followed by the La Maddalena boarding is feasible if you would rather park on the island.

Return times are not stated on the pages we read; with a seven-hour day, expect around 17:00 at Palau and later at La Maddalena, and confirm by phone if you have a ferry or bus to catch.

Who should book it, and who should not

Book Maddalena Experience if you want a mid-size boat, a real look at La Maddalena town with someone explaining it, and a long swim at Cala Corsara rather than four short dips. It suits couples, small families with children over five, and anyone based on the island.
